The Ultimate Guide to Fall Sweaters
By: Stella Ringblom

While summer will always remain my favorite season, something about dressing for fall always excites me. Fall fashion is arguably everyone's favorite. If that doesn’t resonate with you, take a second to visualize this: thick and cozy sweaters, oversized denim, mini Uggs, puffers… The list of fall staples is endless.

Growing up in a European household, I found constant inspiration from Scandinavian influencers and designers. If you look at an average Swedish girl's style, you’ll notice the consistency of the classic striped, oversized knitted sweater. It's been quite difficult for me to find good sweaters that aren't itchy, aren’t too expensive, and fit well; however, I made it a mission at the end of September to find the best sweaters for fall. Based on these criteria, I’ve decided that & Other Stories, MadHappy, and NA-KD are the brands you should be buying your sweaters from this fall.

Instead of saving the best for last, I'm going to start with it. Although & Other Stories sell more expensive pieces, their sweater selection is truly the best. & Other Stories is a Swedish brand created in Stockholm. I discovered this brand a few years ago when visiting family in Sweden, and I instantly fell in love with their clothing. Though they are based in Sweden, they have stores throughout the U.S, and I love to visit their New York City locations. The stores are always clean and "shoppable;” meaning they are organized in a way that allows shoppers to easily find what they are looking for. Their sweaters are comfortable, perfectly oversized, and don't itch. Itchy sweaters are a pain to wear, especially for extended periods. Yet & Other Stories sweaters are easy to wear all day long and several times a week. There are endless options on their website - some more affordable than others. I recently recommended  & Other Stories to one of my friends, and she had a hard time limiting herself to three sweaters!

They also have other pieces, such as skirts, dresses, and high-quality affordable jewelry for the fall. If you struggle to find good fall staples, visit the "fall fashion" section on their website for inspiration. Some of their clothing is more high fashion, but if you sort through it, you can find quality basics that will last for multiple seasons. I included my three favorite sweaters from their site, and trust me, they are worth every penny! For your convenience, here are the links:

  1. Mock Neck Sweater

  2. Striped Knit Sweater

  3. Oversized Patch Pocket Knit

While knitted sweaters are perfect to both dress up and down, sometimes, a comfy hoodie or a crewneck work best. During those extra cold and dark days, it's hard to gain the motivation to put together a full outfit. Thankfully, sweat sets exist, making it easy for us to look both put together while staying comfortable.

This past Christmas, I went skiing with my family in Aspen, Colorado, and of course, my mom and I had to do some shopping. We visited MadHappy for the first time, and they had a wide variety of hoodies, t-shirts, sweatpants, and accessories. We bought a hoodie for my brother, which I obviously had to sneak away with me to Syracuse to help me stay warm. Recently, they have come out with new prints, and I have added nearly every hoodie to my cart.

These sweaters are pricier; however, I prioritize quality over quantity. Knowing that these hoodies won't fall apart within a week is one of the primary reasons why I buy them.

Some of my favorites are:

  1. Classic Cropped Fleece Hoodie

  2. Yankees Snap Fleece Hoodie

  3. Local Optimist Crewneck

MadHappy and & Other Stories are great options, but their products are expensive. Thankfully, NA-KD, another Swedish clothing brand, has amazing dupes. Many of the Scandinavian influencers I follow on Instagram shop from NA-KD. I bought a sweater from NA-KD two years ago, and I still wear it today.

They have a huge selection, so you're bound to find something you like. The Volume Sleeve High Neck Knitted Sweater is a closet staple; they have it in a variety of colors. The green is my personal favorite. As an alternative to the striped sweater linked above, the Colour Striped Knitted Sweater from NA-KD is similar but more affordable.

While there are lots of different online brands and sweater styles to choose from, I hope this selection allows you to find quality items that are comfortable, worth the price, and long-lasting.
