How to Master “Balletcore” From Bun to
Tippy Toes
By: Kacie Morris Edited by: Caroline DiNitto
Ballet is grace. Ballet is elegance. Ballet is the encapsulation of all things beautiful. It should come as no surprise that ballet-inspired looks have made their way onto runways worldwide in recent years. From Miu Miu’s ballet flats and leg warmers, which hit the runway in 2018, to Maison Margiela’s “Off Duty Dancer” in 2023, it is safe to say ribbons, bows, and “ballerina pink” have taken the world by storm. Here’s how to master this look for everyday wear while incorporating pieces you might already own.
Step One: The Basics
The root of any ballerina's outfit stems from a classic leotard. Throw on any form-fitting bodysuit, tank top, or T-shirt in a neutral color such as pink, white, black, or tan. Layering is crucial for mastering this look- pop on a cardigan or wrap sweater overtop to achieve the “warmup” look. To go full-on ballerina, finish off the outfit with any length of a flowy-wrap skirt that complements the colors you have styled on top – bonus points for pink or black tights. If you want a casual look or something better suited for a chilly day, go for a simple pair of leggings and joggers. If you want a more authentic look, opt for a pair of trash bag pants – like a real dancer.
Step Two: Footwear
Many young girls want to dance on their toes just like the pros. Unfortunately, it’s not for everyone. Luckily, there are some ultra-trendy ways to make up for it. Start by grabbing a pair of leg warmers. If you don’t have leg warmers, your favorite pair of tall socks will work fine. Scrunch them down to create a cute but cozy look. To match the outfit, a simple pair of white gym shoes will work, but to incorporate your personal style, try out a pair of ballet flats. You can find these on Amazon for just $18.00 or grab a high-end pair from Miu Miu, but pay the price of a luxury brand. If neither of these is your style, there are still more options to fit the aesthetic. Try out a pair of warm-up boots, a pair of Ugg Minis, or any other short boots you might have in your closet.
Step Three: “The Look”
Achieving the authentic ballerina look takes more than having the perfect outfit. Consider pulling your hair into a slick back ponytail or bun to give that “ready for practice” look. Keep it trendy but timeless, but brush the hair to the crown of your head while maintaining a middle part. For an accent, tie in a ribbon to achieve a more playful look. While makeup is never necessary to have you looking your best, if it is something you want to try, aim for a dewy, glossy look. Pop on your favorite rosy blush to tie in that ballerina pink and a nice bright highlighter on the high points of your cheeks and the tip of your nose to have you shimmering on stage. Carry these shades of light pink up to your eyelids with eyeshadow, starting with a darker shade in the crease of your eye and then going lighter on the lid; use brown or black eyeliner to elongate the shape of the eye – giving the cat-eye effect.
Step Four: Finishing Touches
To finish off your look, you need your perfect accessories. Just add some simple gold hoops and a dainty necklace. When it comes to jewelry for this look, less is more. Every dancer also has their go-to dance bag. Grab a neutral-colored tote, hobo bag, or shoulder purse to fill all your daily essentials.
Once you have each component, you’ll be ready to step on stage. Whether you have been a ballerina for years or never danced a day, achieving this look is easy and attainable with pieces you likely already own. Add elements of your style to give this popular look a personal flair. Confidence is everything in fashion, so wear what makes you feel good, and your outfit will always be en pointe.
