The 70s Comeback in 2023
By: Alexa Fabi

Trend reports for Fall 2023 predict a rise in 70s-inspired fashion. During this year’s NYFW, brands like Michael Kors and Derek Lam 10 Crosby showcased the era of 70s nightclub Studio 54 and its chic silhouettes. There has also been an influx of the color copper, crushed velvets, fringe, and denim inspired by the decade.

The re-emergence of the decade will not apply exclusively to fashion. The 10-episode series of Daisy Jones & the Six, based loosely after renowned rock band Fleetwood Mac, is set to debut on March 3rd, which will bring new awareness to 70s music culture – post the sex, drugs, and rock and roll era. This decade was a time of liberation and freedom, which many people are striving for in this tumultuous political climate. The 70s saw the birth of the modern environmental movement and political turbulence – all of which are still growing issues in 2023.

Michael Kors is becoming an NYFW fan-favorite. This year, the brand’s show brought a taste of the 70s to the catwalk. Moments before the models walked out, a violin instrumental of Fleetwood Mac’s “Go your Way” began to play. The models emerged in modern bohemian chic variations of 1970s fashion. Kors’s use of knit dresses with stunning statement leather belts and bold and colorful fur coats paid tribute to the bohemian era of the 70s. The fringe, knee-high boots, and statement chokers all resemble something that Jane Fonda or Gloria Steinem would have worn during this period.

Kors said in an interview, “‘Influencer’ has taken on a whole new meaning. We’d talk about them as powerful women who were never afraid of expressing themselves with fashion, whether it was Jane Fonda or Gloria Steinem, who I met in 1985 when we did a story headlined, ‘Smart women wear short skirts.’”

Michael Kors is not the only designer channeling urban bohemia. Derek Lam 10 Crosby presented their new fall 2023 collection, undoubtedly with the 1970s in mind. The collection was denim-heavy with a focus on bohemian chic. The denim looks were tailored in a very 70s fashion with pieces in tones of rich copper and beautiful florals. The earthy tones of the collection paid homage to the 70s contributions to fashion.

We have seen various fashion trends repopularized from the past in an urbanistic, modern way. The hairstyles of 70s bohemia have made a comeback over the past two years with the Farrah Fawcett-inspired flippy blowouts and lived-in shag cuts.

Eyewear fashion trends of the 70s were recently popularized as well. Oversized frames have become increasingly popular and are a luxury eyewear classic.

The 70s era amassed fame for some of the biggest names and icons of the century. Many of them have exciting things planned for 2023; Stevie Nicks is set to go on tour alongside Billy Joel later this year. The two icons are bringing back the culture of 70s music, as they will be performing their most popular, classic songs performed live. The two artists hope to honor the music of the 1970s and provide a memorable experience for their fans.

Another icon from the era, Jane Fonda, has started her own Climate PAC. The actress was well-known in the 70s for her political activism and advocacy, and now she has returned to marching for climate change over 50 years later.

Similar to the times of the Nixon presidency, political upheaval is on the rise and frustration is only growing in response to Washington’s inaction towards climate change and other urgent issues. The 70s’ best contributions, like fringe, sunnies, and rock music, are making a comeback. I think it will be groovy.
